Each year, TiE Boston honors and celebrates the achievements of entrepreneurs at our end of year gala. Awardees are selected through their remarkable contribution to move the needle forward in creating or redefining the industry by means of investment, mentoring, education and business creativity. 

 

Awards are presented across several categories such as venture capital, innovation, healthcare, B2B solutions, philanthropy, and value creation. Past awardees have included Niraj Shah, Founder & CEO of Wayfair, Yvonne Hao, COO & CFO of PillPack, Dr. Amar Sawhney, Founder & CEO of Incept, and Kris Canekeratne, Chairman & CEO of Virtusa.

Anant Agrawal, PhD,

Over the course of his career, Professor Agarwal founded companies such as Virtual Machine Works Inc., InCert Software, Determina, and Tilera Corporation and served as the director of CSAIL, MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In addition to being a successful entrepreneur, he is also a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, a Board Member at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and author of the textbook "Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, he went on to earn a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Stanford University. 

Professor Agarwal is the recipient of several national and international awards. In 2018, he earned one of the most distinguished awards in the field of education when he was named the Yidan Prize Laureate for Education Development. In 2017, he was bestowed with the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian awards in India. In 2016, he received the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize for Higher Education, which recognized his work in advancing the MOOC movement. In 2012, he was named in the Forbes' list of top 15 education innovators. In 2011, his work on Organic Computing was selected by Scientific American as one of 10 World-Changing Ideas. He also holds a Guinness World Record for the largest microphone array.

Reshma Kewalramani, M.D., FASN, first joined Vertex in 2017. Prior to Vertex, Dr. Kewalramani spent more than 12 years at Amgen where she held a variety of roles across Research and Development, including as Vice President, Global Clinical Development, Nephrology & Metabolic Therapeutic Area and Vice President, U.S. Medical Organization, a group she established and grew to assume responsibility for the full portfolio of molecules across six therapeutic areas. Dr. Kewalramani received her medical degree, with honors, from the Boston University School of Medicine and is also an alumnus of the Harvard Business School.

Praveen Tipirneni, MD is the President and CEO of Morphic Therapeutic Inc.  Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Global Strategy at Cubist Pharmaceuticals, a position in which he served from 2002 until the company’s acquisition by Merck in 2015. Prior to joining Cubist, Dr. Tipirneni worked at Sun Microsystems in corporate strategy, Covad Communications in Corporate Strategy, and Deltagen in business development. He also served time as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Dr. Tipirneni received a bachelor’s degree from MIT in mechanical engineering and an M. D. from McGill University. After completing his post-graduate residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago, he received his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in healthcare finance.

Prof. Hari Balakrishnan, PhD

Hari Balakrishnan is the Co-Founder, Chairman, and CTO of Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) and also the Fujitsu Professor in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab at MIT, where his research on the CarTel project led to the creation of CMT. CMT’s mission is to make the world’s roads and drivers safer. Since its first product launch in 2012 that pioneered the field of mobile usage-based insurance, CMT has become the world’s leading and largest telematics and analytics provider for insurers, ride-hailing companies, and fleets. CMT’s DriveWell platform uses mobile sensing, AI, and behavioral science to measure driving risk and incentivize safer driving, while its Claims Studio provides real-time crash detection, crash reconstruction, and damage assessment using telematics and AI. Today, CMT runs over 50 active enterprise programs in 25 countries, improving safety for millions of drivers every day.

 

Before CMT, Hari was a founding advisor to Meraki, which originated from an MIT wireless mesh networking project in 2006 and was acquired by Cisco in 2012. In 2003, Hari co-founded StreamBase Systems (acquired by TIBCO), and before that was a network algorithms consultant for Sandburst (acquired by Broadcom). All these companies, like CMT, were spinoffs from MIT CSAIL.

 

A world-renowned and highly-cited researcher in computer science, Hari was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2015 and to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. Born in Nagpur and raised in Mumbai, Kalpakkam, and Chennai, Hari received his BTech in computer science from IIT Madras in 1993, which named him a Distinguished Alumnus in 2013, and his PhD from UC Berkeley in 1998 with a thesis that won the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Michael Skok

Michael started his first software business as a teenager, spent 21 years as an entrepreneur and then the past 15 years as a venture investor. During this time, he has founded, worked with and invested in startups, and created thousands of jobs and billions of dollars of value.Along the way, he also mentored and taught for 4 years at Harvard University, and created the Startup Secrets series. As an entrepreneur and an investor, Michael has focused on breakthrough technologies and disruptive business models including Open Source, Cloud, IoT, and emerging domains such as Blockchain, Virtual/Augmented Reality, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.  He has served on or is active on many private and public boards such as Acquia, Demandware (now a Salesforce company), Mautic, Salsify and Zaius. He has also participated in leadership roles in many industry groups such as the Software Publishers Association where he was Chairman for many years in Europe. In 2015, Michael co-founded Underscore VC first and foremost to empower entrepreneurs to realize their vision in building impactful businesses. Reshma Shetty, PhD

Reshma Shetty: Reshma Shetty co-founded synthetic biology Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. in 2008.  Spun out of MIT, Ginkgo’s mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Started in a Cambridge, MA apartment, Reshma has helped to grow the company to 200 people and raised $450M in financing. In October 2018, Ginkgo launched Bioworks4, its fourth generation facility for design, fabrication, and testing of custom-designed microbes.  Ginkgo is concurrently engineering more than 50 organisms to spec for customers including Ajinomoto, Cargill, and ADM.

 

Reshma has been active in the field of synthetic biology for 10+ years.  In 2008, Forbes magazine named Reshma one of Eight People Inventing the Future and in 2011, Fast Company named her one of 100 Most Creative People in Business. In 2018, Business Insider named her one of the most powerful female engineers. Reshma Shetty has a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in Biological Engineering from MIT.

Jamie Heywood: An MIT-trained mechanical engineer, Jamie entered the field of translational medicine when his 29-year-old brother, Stephen, was diagnosed with ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Described by CNNMoney as one of the 15 companies that will change the world, Jamie co-founded PatientsLikeMe to ensure patient outcomes become the primary driver of the medical care and discovery process. 

 

Since its inception in 2004 as an online community for ALS patients, PatientsLikeMe has evolved into the leading platform for self-reported data from patients, with over 700,000 users tracking more than 2,000 conditions, and creating over 43 million data points about the disease. Jamie is also the founder and past CEO of the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI), the world’s first non-profit biotechnology company. During his tenure at ALS TDI, Jamie helped pioneer an open research model and industrialized therapeutic validation process that made ALS TDI the world’s largest and most comprehensive ALS research program. Jamie has founded or co-founded three other healthcare companies: AOBiome, Genetic Networks, and TheSocialMedwork, and is an active member of a community of innovators working to bring dramatic improvements to the way we discover, develop and deliver effective health. Jamie and his brother were the subjects of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jonathan Weiner’s biography His Brother’s Keeper and the documentary So Much So Fast.

In 2018, Subu Kota celebrated 50 years of his arrival in the United States, and the during the last five decades he launched nearly 50 companies of all shapes and sizes. But when it comes to business and charity, Mr. Kota is known for his giving and community service. In September of last year, Mr. Kota, Founder & CEO of Boston Group USA, donated $1 million to promote cricket for the blind worldwide. Some of the charities and non-profits Mr. Kota has worked include India Society of Worcester (ISW), YMCA and Samarthanam Trust. He has served as trustee and chairman of ISW, helped raise $12 million to YMCA, one of the largest YMCA in boroughs in Massachusetts. Mr. Kota is a serial entrepreneur with broad experience ranging from Information Technology Consulting, e-Learning Services and Pharmaceuticals Research and Manufacturing. Sanjeev actively involved in the community as an investor, startup advisor and mentor. In the past, he has served on the board of TiE Boston and as the chairman of the TiE Challenge program.
